Rabindranath Tagore: the poet of India and universe
Whenever it comes to a distinctiveness of world poetry Rabindranath Tagore is the first one to be remembered. The novel prize awardee has given world its most impressive gift. Rabindranath Tagore`s work include an empathitical approach to the nature as well as to un cared beings of world. His novel works beautify and lionize the unseen passage and glimpses of India during the mid 20th century. The untorn pages of history have the maximum appreciation of Rabindranath Tagore. His vision of seeing the nature cannot be achieved by any other poet or any other personality. The one and only talent even lives today as a small flame in people’s feeling through his works and poems. Gratitude to Rabindranath Tagore cannot be articulated in words. .
Born on 5th may 1851 in Kolkata, Rabindranath was the 14th son of Debendranath Tagore and Sharadasundari Devi. In his brief history his first loss was that his mother expired at his age of 12, but this unpleasant incident did not daunt Rabindranath Tagore and he sustained his passion of writing poems and novels. His former schooling took place in St. Xavier’s school with his most number of publications in a magazine. As a boy Rabindranath was very warmhearted towards environment and wrote many short stories on nature, and then slowly he shifted to social vision. His vision towards the viewpoint in society was quite different. He believed that if independence struggle be supposed to launch it should begin form the humanity itself. He encouraged widow- remarriage and dispirited child marriage, this he started by breaking the very own rule of his house i.e. by the marriage of his son Rathindranath with a widow Pratima. Rabindranath married Mrinalini Devi at the age of 22 and had 5 children, the eldest one was a daughter- Madhurilata and then it was his son- Rathindranath, the youngest were two daughters’ Renuka and Mira and his youngest son was Samindranath.
Some of Rabindranath`s admirable works include the stories of Ghare Baire and chokher bali. And the N.C.E.R.T books contain one of his most touching poems- ‘I cannot remember my mother’ which was written by him soon after his mother’s death. The years 1904-1920 served as a great melancholy to Tagore. His wife- Mrinalini, his daughter Renuka and son- Samindranath dies lethal death to diseases of tuberculosis.
In his lifetime Rabindranath traveled to many countries of Europe, Japan and china. He met many personalities like Helen Kelar, Victoria Ocampa, sculptor spitz, viceroys and presidents. His poetries and stories act as an inspirational sources and divine peace to those disturbed and to those who are without solace. His noble personality is respected all over the world with a motivation to poets and artists. Apart from poetry and literature Rabindranath also shaped some excellent drawings and paintings visualizing the outermost society and internal feelings of life.
Some of Tagore`s works include eminent plays of prithvirajyar parajya, abhilaash, banaphul, jnankhaner o pratibimba, kabi kahini, bhagnahriday, manmoyi, bhagnatari, bhagnahriday, valmiki pratibha, rudrachanda, bahu- takuranir hat, binodini, chokher bali, smaran, gora, panchabhut, kanyagranthavali etc. One of Rabindanath Tagore’s poetry jana-gana-mana is the National Anthem of India and aamar sonar bangla is the National Anthem of Bangladesh. The most significant work presented by Tagore is Geetanjali, the collection of poems with a touch of emotional feelings. It is probably the most famous work gifted by Tagore to the world. People all over the world came to meet Tagore after this publication of Geetanjali. For this luminous work Tagore was awarded novel prize for literature becoming the first Indian to win novel prize in the year 1914. In 1918 due to this astonishing work Rabindranath was given the designation ‘Gurudev’ by Mahatma Gandhi.
The alliance between Mahatma Gandhi and Gurudev started since the year i915, they exchanged numerous letters and debated through newspaper. In the year 1919 both expressed sorrow over the Jallianawala bagh massacre through telegrams and letters. Through this in the year 1920 the institution started by Tagore- Viswa Bharati becomes internationally famous. In 1930 Tagore turns totally towards paintings and artistic works, today in Shantiniketan Tagore`s paintings can be observed in the atmosphere, the paintings reflect an aura of discipline in the life of Tagore. In 1925 the meeting between Gandhi and Tagore to discuss the significance of khadi itself is a symbol of Tagore`s disciplined nationalist feelings and lifestyle.
Rabindranath Tagore`s visualization towards the ambiance is an inspiration today for world authors to achieve his perception. Tagore was an appreciator of environment and did many measures to protect it. He introduced two main festivals in shanti niketan- halakarshana and vriksharopana. Tagore introduces many streams of study in viswa bharati and many other institutions for the acknowledgment of these streams. Some of these include kala bhawan, havells hall and china bhawan introduced in the year 1937.
In the year 1939 a very famed book named Rabindra rachnavali appreciating the splendor of Rabindanath Tagore`s works of his era are published. Mahatma Gandhi many times visited Shantiniketan during Tagore`s illness in the year 1940. This event took place on 26th September 1940. In the year 1941 Tagore was designated with the title ‘Bharat Bhaskar’ by a king in Tripura, he then moved to Jorashanko Takurbari, the place where he was born and raised, there on 30th July 1941 he dictated his final poem and then on one poignant morning of 7th August 1941 the immense personality Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore expires in an upstairs room of Jorasanko Thakurbari, where he was born and raised. His end does not symbolize the end of Indian poetry but to a certain extent it is an expectation from Tagore himself that he is to be succeeded by one more skilled than him. Tagore eternally resides not only in the heart of inhabitants of Bengal but in the heart of world wide poetry lovers. At the closing stages few of Tagore`s beautiful and famous lines are remembered-
“Give me the supreme faith of love,
This is my prayer.”
